Traditional caning patterns have fresh appeal when applied to this Spring’s handbags!

It’s no secret that I love wicker and straw bags for warm weather. My closet is filled with handbags and tote bags in every size, shape and color.

But one type I don’t own (yet!) is a caned bag. These have been popping up all over for spring and summer, and I was intrigued by the pattern and its application to accessories.

Traditional strand or hand caning is actually the most well-known of the weaving patterns (think of open and airy chair seats). The weaving method is achieved by hand with individual strands of cane to create the instantly recognizable octagonal design.

The 7-step method of caning is tedious and time consuming, but the result is a lovely, strong and durable pattern. And, the pattern looks fresh and new on handbags this season.
