MM LaFleur: How to Shop a Trunk Show

MM LaFleur: How to Shop a Trunk ShowAbout 20 years ago, my friend began using a personal shopper at Macy’s. At the time I (unmarried and childless) thought she was crazy. Why on earth would she use a personal shopper, when there were endless racks of gorgeous clothes, all just waiting to be discovered?

As a busy professional and mom of three, now I know the answer!

And, many women I know feel the same way. With pressure coming from all sides – work responsibilities, family commitments, and volunteer obligations – shopping can quickly become a chore, instead of a joy.

So, when a friend invited me along to a MM LaFleur trunk show in Philadelphia, I jumped at the chance. If you’ve never been to a trunk show before, the experience can vary. Some are more intimate than others. Some are even advertised to the general public.

This was a very personal experience and arranged by appointment. When we arrived at the suite in the historic Rittenhouse Hotel, we were greeted and offered a glass of Prosecco. Then we met our stylist, Pauline… tall and willowy, graceful, with the face of a cover model. I was dismayed. How could this gorgeous creature ever hope to dress anyone other than another runway-ready 20-something?

Was I in for a surprise.

My friend had already pre-selected a few pieces that caught her eye, which Pauline had ready. Then Pauline listened to what she said about where she would wear her clothes, how she needed them to perform, and which aspects of her figure she wanted to showcase (like her great legs), and which she wanted to minimize (a large bust).

Pauline then selected a rack filled with absolutely beautiful options.

Since color is not something my friend usually wears (she employs instead, a vast black and white wardrobe for all seasons), Pauline first introduced some colors that were muted enough to be considered neutrals, but made a huge impact. In fact, the very first item she tried on, a teal colored dress, made my friend’s eyes turn to stunning sapphire – and yes, she bought that one!

Then Pauline cleverly added other pieces that my friend would not have tried on, if she had been shopping alone. The result was phenomenal.

In the end, we walked away with two short-sleeved blouses, one long-sleeved blouse, and two lovely dresses. Every single piece was elegant, simple, and easily dressed up or down with scarves, jewelry, jackets, or cardigans.

From start to finish, the MM LaFleur experience was exceptional. But, the clothes themselves are even better… perfect seams, attention to figure flattering darting and necklines, plus lovely accents like detachable belts, all in crushable, packable fabrics. This is clothing that will last many, many seasons and still look fantastic.

Dresses, skirts, pants, blouses and more are available at MM LaFleur  online. And, the company also offers a unique “Bento Box” subscription service: 4-6 pieces. 4 days. Zero pressure. If you are a busy woman, this could make shopping so much easier – and, really who doesn’t love to receive a package in the mail?

If you prefer to try on the line before your first purchase, there are also several MM LaFleur trunk shows across the country, throughout the year. And, Pauline confided to me that a new store will be opening in the fall in Washington, DC (just as my daughter begins her first semester at Georgetown University). Hooray!
