Updated Look for Your Home: Spring Cleaning!

Updated Look for Your Home: Spring Cleaning! Each spring, not only does my wardrobe need a bit of freshening up, my house does, too! The warm, rich colors that felt so cozy as the winter winds howled make me feel a little claustrophobic once I can throw open the windows. So, each spring, I do a little selective editing as the thermometer begins to rise. One of the simplest ways to get an updated look for your home to add slipcovers to stuffed furniture. White or cream cotton duck is especially fresh looking and has the distinct benefit of being washable.  Use on couches, ottomans and even dining chairs.

If slipcovers aren’t an option, simply replacing toss pillows with lighter colored ones packs a big punch. I swap out deep burgundy for lighter oatmeal and it makes a world of difference.

Rolling up the rug is another trick that can make a space feel brighter. My living room oriental gets the old heave ho (at least as far as the garage) when the weather turns fine. The exposed hardwood floors feel almost beachy – even though the shore is miles away!

A change in accessories can also lighten the space – and the mood. I am a huge fan of inspirational art (although my kids tell me that I am cheesy). I have signs and canvases throughout the house which never fail to make me smile. I also swap art from room to room. My family jokes that they never knows what they coming home to, but it’s an easy and free fix (and I like keeping everyone on their toes!).

Finally, don’t forget the power of scent – from fresh flowers, to oil diffusers, to candles. In spring, I ditch the Bayberry, Sugar Cookie, and Pine scents and break out Fresh Linen or Beach Day for an instant update.

Above are a few of my favorite pieces to help you transition your home to spring. You may also want to visit Wayfair for a great selection of mirrors which help reflect light and make a space feel brighter and larger. Or, try Pottery Barn for wonderful outdoor and garden furniture options, many of which can be adapted to stylish indoor living. And, I like West Elm for fresh new pillows, throws and pouffs.
