Window Boxes: How to Add Charm to Any Style Home

Window Boxes add instant personality and charm to any home's fascadeWell before the advent of my Susan Said… WHAT?! Pinterest Boards, I kept a massive three-ring binder full of home and garden ideas which contained images of everything from pergolas, to winding pathways, to window boxes bursting with seasonal blooms. I was actually quite organized with dividers clearly marking ideas, color schemes, and notes for “Kitchen,” “Bath,” “Library,” and “Bedroom.” Of course, the fattest section (by far) was labeled “Garden.” My love affair with gardening didn’t begin until I was well into adulthood. But, once I purchased my first home, there was simply no stopping me.

I’ve learned a lot in the years since then. And, one of my greatest lessons had nothing to do with trees, flowers or shrubs. What I found after some trial and error (abject failure, if I am completely honest) is that the most important part of creating a beautiful and relaxing garden is not the plant selection – it’s the structure.

Today, my garden boasts hundreds of feet of rock border (with stones laboriously dug from the neighboring woods and trundled by wheelbarrow) and a garden center’s worth of flowers. But, if you don’t have time for such labor-intensive projects (and neither do I these days) you can opt for easier fixes that provide serious charm with minimal fuss. And, window boxes are an easy, fast and effective way to add personality to your home’s exterior.

If your home wasn’t blessed with distinctive architectural details (and my traditional, 2-story suburban colonial was most definitely not) window boxes provide an instant face lift. Fill them with colorful annuals in the spring and summer, harvest bounty in the fall, and fresh greens with striking red berry accents during the holidays!

Window Boxes for Every Style Home

Window boxes are available in many sizes, colors and configurations. Some of my favorites include Self-Watering Window Boxes from Gardeners.com, which have big water reservoirs that keep soil moist and plants healthy (a must for south-facing windows). These are available for only $34.95 each (2 or more for $33.00 each) and come in three colors.

I also love the Vienna Deluxe Wrought Iron Window Boxes from WindowBoxes.com. These beauties are sturdily crafted from steel and have been painted with a professional black powder coat finish. The swirls have a distinctly European flair and are so romantic! Retail $119.99.

Finally, the Drennon Nantucket Galvanized Steel Window Box Planters in Nantucket Blue are pretty enough to rival the flowers you plant in them. These rust-proof containers are the epitome of rustic chic and currently on sale for $69.99 (previously $79.99) at Wayfair.

Oh me, oh my, window boxes are my weakness. I don’t have a house, and I keep dreaming of a nice wooden door to put a handmade wreath and window boxes overflowing with flowers. Sounds wonderful!!!!!

Window boxes add so much beauty to a house. I have a hanging basket on my porch since I don’t have the windows for the boxes.
