Bonsai Trees Cure a Gardener’s Mid-Winter Blues

Gardenia Bonsai Tree from The Soothing Company, Retail $40. Bonsai Trees Cure a Gardener's Mid-Winter BluesI am a self-professed gardening aficionado. Creating a lush, fragrant and tranquil environment is a joy to me – not only because my family can appreciate the end result, but because the process itself is so rewarding. Several of my closest friends are similarly devoted and together we pore over seed catalogs, share clippings, and visit the annual Philadelphia Flower Show and Wilmington Flower Market for inspiration.

But winter on the East Coast is hard on the gardening enthusiast. Dreary weather starts as early as October. And, surprise snows have been known to arrive as late as April. There are only so many ideas that I can pin to Susan’s Garden on Pinterest before I need to actually do something.

That’s why I was so thrilled to learn about a wide variety of bonsai trees available from The Soothing Company.

The art of creating bonsai is one of those frequently misunderstood concepts. It’s often confused with dwarfing, but bonsai landscapes do not use genetically dwarfed trees.

Bonsai trees are actually derived from regular stock and seeds. Instead of dwarfing, creating and maintaining a bonsai tree requires cultivation techniques — pruning, root reduction, potting, defoliation, and grafting.

The result is a small tree that mimics the shape and style of mature, full-size trees. And, according to the experts at world-renowned Longwood Gardens (the site of an amazing bonsai exhibit), “the artistic composition of the bonsai is a result of the partnership between the grower and the plant.”

The Gardenia Tree, pictured, is a beautiful example. It will bloom from March through June and has stunning white flowers. Since it’s only between 6” – 8” tall, it’s also the perfect tree for indoors – even if you have a small space. And, I love the soft fragrance. Gardenia is one of the leading scents used in perfume manufacturing for centuries. Retail $40
