Nylon stockings have come a long way since the DuPont Company unveiled them at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Today, the best control top stockings contain Spandex, as well as nylon. And, the shaping and contouring abilities are just marvelous! In order to get that smooth, sleek Red Carpet look, control top stockings are a real Spanx alternative. Unlike the often torturous shapewear, control top stockings are wearable all day – or night – long. Plus, I feel a little less like I am completely encased in battle armor. And, they still slim the silhouette and make legs look great!
For maximum control, my faves include Olivia & Joy control top stockings. These stockings are made of 90% Nylon, with a crucial 10% Spandex. They have just the right amount of stretch. But, they are still incredibly sheer.
In case you think that the word sheer translates to “runs-the-first-time-you-wear-them,” don’t worry. These stockings are built to last.
And, although a reinforced toe is sensible, this season’s peep toe pumps, boots and booties demand a sandal toe. Luckily, these sandal toe versions are surprisingly durable and run resistant.
Of course, even though they are run resistant, these are still delicate pieces. They should be hand washed in gentle detergent (I use dish soap), blotted dry with a towel (never wrung), and hung to fully dry. It takes a bit of effort to care for them this way. However, they will last longer and look better than taking the quick and easy route. Even one trip through the washing machine in a delicates bag can snag the fabric.
Control top stockings by Olivia & Joy are available in two colors: sheer black and nude. I think that the nude makes a smooth transition from summer’s bare legs to fall’s more put together looks. But, as the temperatures dip, I find myself reaching for the sheer black more frequently.
Luckily, these stockings are so well priced, you needn’t choose one color over the other. Unlike comparable Maidenform Body Shaper Mini Toner Sheers at Macy’s, ($20 per pair!) Olivia & Joy stockings are sold as a 3-pack for only $12.50 on Amazon.
These stockings are “sheer” bliss.
