This fall, designers have pulled out all the stops. From oversized statement chokers, to flowing velvet Renaissance-inspired dresses, to traffic-stopping leopard coats. There are even David Bowie-esque high, high, high platform boots, retro glam 1980’s one-shouldered tops, and embellished elbow length gloves.
It all feels a bit costume-y to me. And, these runway looks will likely need to be seriously, drastically watered down before they make an appearance in most middle class, suburban shopping malls!
But, one trend I that I am fully behind is the navy-inspired, sailor look. This is surprising because I generally associate “sailor” with “summer.” But, designers have taken traditional colors, striking button embellishments, and classic stripes and created some standout fall pieces that are sure to become favorites.
My personal top picks are relatively conservative navy blues and blacks, with double rows of shiny brass buttons or traditional stripes (and not a kitschy anchor or ship’s wheel in sight!). These pieces feel crisp and just right for the change of season.
Other top picks include Tahari’s Sailor Look Wide-Leg Pants at Macy’s and Melissa Odabash’s Nautical Sailor Look Three-Quarter Sleeve Crop Top at Saks 5th Avenue. But, the sailor look is everywhere, in all price points for every budget.
