Today is National Hammock Day and, since it’s also Friday, I am more than ready to celebrate in the garden! A hammock truly is one of the best gifts I have ever received. My husband and children bestowed me with a festive green and white striped canvas version for Mother’s Day about 12 years ago. It finally wore out this summer, so I exchanged it for a traditional-looking, all-weather rope version, like the one shown above.
It’s my favorite garden accessory! There’s something so tranquil and inviting about a hammock that simply beckons to everyone — young and old — to stop and relax.
Of course, a hammock begs some accessories to really make it the perfect place to read, snooze, or just daydream. A small table to hold drinks, snacks, and sunglasses is a must. I love a Chinese garden stool like the crisp white one, pictured, because it’s multi-functional. Use as a table, or as an extra seat, as needed.
Of course, now you need something to put on that table. And — surprise! — I suggest a glass of wine. But, don’t risk your fine stemware. These unbreakable wine glasses look lovely and won’t jeopardize cut toes if you swing that hammock a wee bit too hard.
And, a rope hammock is certainly cozy, but really needs a pillow for maximum comfort. My hammock pillow is actually a bed pillow covered in a vintage sugar sack from Cuba. But, we can’t leave it outside. So, a better idea is an all-weather pillow like the cute denim-look one that I’ve showcased.
Last (but not least) if you need an excuse to lounge, bring a good book outside. You’ll look literary and ambitious, even if you never make it past page 3! With the Olympics just around the corner, I’ve begun reading The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. Although, since I do read in the hammock, I admit that I haven’t made it too far…
