Denim has become a true staple in American women’s wardrobes over the decades. I’m sure that Levi Strauss never envisioned the fashion revolution he was starting when he created his first pair of “cowboy trousers” back in 1873. But, most of us can’t imagine a wardrobe that doesn’t include this durable, go-anywhere fabric. This season, designers have kicked denim up a notch (or two!). In addition to traditional jeans and capris, stores are filled to overflowing with skirts, dresses, tops, bags, and even shoes. All of these amazing options offer women a bit of a conundrum. How to wear denim and the new, fun pieces, without resorting to a look reminiscent of (tragic) Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s head-to-toe denim ensembles?
My suggestion? Simply stick to one piece at a time. Pair a denim tank or top with crisp white shorts and Sperry boat shoes, add trendy red wedges and a striped tote bag to a flirty denim dress, glam up a traditional denim mini with one of this season’s sequined tops, or carry a denim crossbody bag with a boho print maxi dress and leather gladiator sandals.
