Walpole Woodworking: Cottage Garden Structure

WALPOLE, Seaside Custom Moon GateWell before the advent of my Susan Said… WHAT?! Pinterest Boards, I kept a massive three-ring binder full of home and garden ideas. I was actually quite organized with dividers clearly marking ideas, color schemes, and notes for “Kitchen,” “Bath,” “Library,” and “Bedroom.” Of course, the fattest section – by far – was labeled “Garden!”

My love affair with gardening didn’t begin until I was well into adulthood and had my very own “bit of earth” as Miss Mary requests in The Secret Garden. Once we purchased our first home, there was simply no stopping me.

I’ve learned a lot since then. And, one of my greatest lessons had nothing to do with trees, flowers or shrubs. What I found after some trial and error (and abject failure, if I am completely honest) is that the most important part of creating a beautiful and relaxing garden is not the plant selection – it’s the structure.

Today, my garden boasts hundreds of feet of rock borders (with rock laboriously dug from the neighboring woods and trundled by wheelbarrow), a brick patio (laid by hand, using reclaimed brick), and a 3-level, terraced backyard.

WALPOLE, Lattice Window BoxIf you don’t have time for such labor-intensive projects, there’s a much easier way: Walpole Woodworking! Walpole Woodworking is my ultimate go-to resource for all things garden related – from she sheds and buildings, to pergolas, to garden furniture.

For example, a garden gate adds a romantic, cottage-y feel to the garden, even if your garden is a tiny patch in the city. The Seaside Custom Moon Gate, pictured, combines arbor and gate and would be stunning covered in climbing roses or clematis. Crescent Arbor with Moon Gate retail price is dependent upon customization: $3,895 – $5,995

I also love how window boxes dress up a plain house. If your home isn’t blessed with distinctive architectural details (and my traditional 2-story suburban colonial was most definitely not) window boxes provide an instant facelift. Fill them with colorful annuals in the spring and summer, harvest bounty in the fall, and fresh greens with striking red berry accents during the holidays! The classic Lattice Window Box, shown, is one of my favorites and is available in a variety of widths to fit any window. Lattice Window Box retail price is dependent on window width $260.10 – $350.10

WALPOLE, Orangerie PlanterFinally, no garden, patio, or front doorstep would be complete without a planter of some kind. If container gardening on a condo balcony is the extent of your green thumb abilities, choosing the right container is crucial. I love the Orangerie Planter, pictured, which is substantial in size (25″ sq. planter, 28 3/4″ high) and really makes a statement! Fill with a variety of flowers, trailing vines, or even add a twig obelisk for extra height. Orangerie Planter Retail $538.20

Wow ~ you can come help me with my yard anytime! Sure sounds like you and your husband have the love for it. I do to but I can no longer do any heavy physical stuff. So things like what they offer that I used to build with the help of my hubby I have to purchase. They sure do have some beautiful things! Where did I leave my wallet that actually has some money in it?

Awww… thanks! We do love our gardens, although sometimes I feel like we bit off a little more than we could chew. Walpole is one of my faves for all sorts of garden ornamentation and structures. I have to admit, though, I did just turn a salvaged (Free!) cupola into a birdbath, so a wallet isn’t ALWAYS necessary!
