Cufflinks Add an Instant Dash of Personality

Cufflinks add instant personality to a blouseWhen my parents were newlyweds in Manhattan, my dad had all of his shirts custom made. French cuffs were popular and he also acquired a creditable selection of cufflinks – everything from inexpensive jeweled pieces to the requisite yellow gold, monogramed links.

Recently, I had the opportunity to create my own bespoke blouse with Joe Button in Sydney, Australia. And of course, I choose a French cuff so that I could take advantage of the lovely vintage pieces gathering dust in dad’s jewelry box!

Although there are many cufflinks designed just for women, I generally find them a bit fussy. Instead, I prefer to “borrow” a man’s version. The masculine look of the jewelry combined with a decidedly feminine blouse or dress is such a wonderful and unexpected contrast!

Vintage cufflinks are readily available at jewelry stores everywhere. Simply visit the “Estate Jewelry” section of your local shop – you’ll be surprised at the selection. Vintage pieces add loads of personality to an ensemble and a distinctive design can be a real conversation starter!

If your vintage search comes up empty, however, I’ve highlighted some interesting new cufflinks above from Brooks Brothers, Paul Smith, and more. These run the gamut from very traditional (black enamel) to fun and funky (pastel stripes) to suit your mood.

Now you don’t have to just wear your heart on your sleeve, you can wear tigers, scarab beetles and pearls, too!
