Gingham is one of the quintessential summer fabrics. The traditional red and white checked pattern evokes memories of July 4th fireworks, barbeques held poolside, and that old tire swing by the lake…
But, this year, gingham has grown up! Some of my favorite designers — from Marc Jacobs, to Tory Burch, to Kate Spade — have taken this American staple and given it swagger using stylized checks, oversized patterns, and ultra-sophisticated colors.
The trick to wearing gingham (without resembling Elly May Clampett from The Beverly Hillbillies) is to use the pattern sparingly and in muted colors.
Some of my favorite gingham looks are pictured above. Will you wear gingham this summer?
