What are the Pantone Color Trends for Fall 2023?

Pantone Colors for Fall 2023Last night I re-watched The Devil Wears Prada – a classic film for anyone who loves fashion! Even though I’ve seen it before, I still laughed out loud at many of the scenes – if you’ve seen the movie then “cube of cheese,” “6 is the new 14,” and “The National Guard … can I do that?” will immediately put a smile on your face, too! One of my favorite scenes, though, is during a run-through when Miranda Priestly (played with aplomb by the divine Meryl Streep) attempts to explain to the hapless Andie (adorable Anne Hathaway) how “the tastemakers” influence your life, whether you realize it or not:

Miranda Priestly explains, “But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise. It’s not lapis. It’s actually cerulean. … [insert long-but-accurate rant]… However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room…“

Which brings me to Pantone’s color trends for fall. Like it or not, each year the tastemakers at Pantone deem certain colors “in.” Once you’re aware of the color palette trends, you’ll begin to notice that color selections in women’s clothing are actually rather limited, and why last year’s favorite begins to look “dated.”

This year I admit that I like many of the Pantone selections. In women’s fashion you’ll see:

  • Anne Hathaway in The devil Wears Prada, blue sweater PANTONE 12-0912 TCX – Tender Peach
  • PANTONE 17-2624 TCX – Rose Violet
  • PANTONE 18-1750 TCX – Viva Magenta
  • PANTONE 17-1464 TCX – Red Orange
  • PANTONE 19-1555 TCX – Red Dahlia
  • PANTONE 13-0751 TCX – High Visibility
  • PANTONE 17-3934 TCX – Persian Jewel
  • PANTONE 13-6030 TSX – Carnival Glass
  • PANTONE 17-1544 TCX – Burnt Sienna
  • PANTONE 14-0255 TSX – Kohlrabi

According to Pantone, these shades, “are expressive of a new reality. Striving forward into the future with elation and anticipation, colors for Autumn/Winter 2023/2024 signify our desire to communicate the joy of creativity and design joy into our lives. Encouraging exploration and experimentation, these color combinations are opening space for free, fun, and inclusive color imaginings.”

While some are more traditional fall hues (Burnt Sienna or Red Orange) I love some of Pantone’s out-of-the-box thinking. I am already envisioning how lovely a cashmere sweater would be in Persian Jewel blue or Carnival Glass green… and, how a dash of High Visibility yellow would make a dreary, wintery day so much brighter!

Which of these colors will you be wearing this fall?
