Originally, Fair Isle knits (named after Fair Isle, a part of the Shetland islands) became popular in 1921 when the Prince of Wales famously wore the pattern. An incredible resurgence occurred in the 1980’s (in part thanks to Lisa Birnbauch and The Preppy Handbook). Today, my teens sport their own, updated versions of the pattern on everything from sweater dresses to knit hobo bags.
In fact, Fair Isle sweaters, hats, gloves, and all manner of cold weather gear are simply everywhere you turn this year — from Harper’s Bazaar magazine to the runways at D&G, Marc Jacobs, and Proenza Schouler.
Now, you can add the Fair Isle snowflake pattern to your winter wardrobe with this adorable set of gloves, hat and matching scarf from Covington. Snuggly soft and oh-so-warm, this cherry red set will make heading out into the cold just a little less onerous! Retail $30
