The Silk Headscarf… What’s Old is New Again

French Girl StyleThe Silk Headscarf… What’s Old is New Again has a certain je ne sais quoi. It’s hard to define, but easy to spot. From ropes of pearls, to jeans and a tee, a French girl always looks put together, no matter what she’s wearing. And, that confidence extends to the humble scarf. Really just a simple scrap of fabric, a silk scarf is, nevertheless, the perfect “finish” for any outfit. And, this year, the silk scarf – worn as a headscarf – mixes 1950’s retro glamour with an homage to none other than The Queen.

The look began to gather steam in 2021. Vogue explains, “Featured on the runways of Versace, Dior, Max Mara and more, the humble headscarf has seen its status elevated this year. And from everything we’re seeing on Instagram, the versatile accessory is having a moment.”

The best (and easiest) ways to wear a silk headscarf include:

  • Cinderella style, tied at the nape of the neck under your hair
  • 1960’s inspired, twisted through a messy top bun
  • Rosie the Riveter style, rolled and used as a headband
  • Wrapped around a low ponytail
  • Twisted through a braid
  • Balmoral style, tied firmly under the chin
  • Jackie O or convertible car style, twisted under the chin and tied in the back

If you don’t have any silk scarves, they are easy to find. Charity shops, brocantes and designer resale stores are all awash in beautiful, colorful options, both vintage and contemporary. So, you are sure to find loads of must-haves with very little effort. (Prices can vary depending on designer, age and condition – click here for great thrift shopping tips and tricks.)

Of course, how you wear the scarf is important. But, how you pair the scarf is essential.

According to ELLE, in ‘Tie The Knot – NYFW Was All About The Balmoral Chic Hair Handkerchief,’ “Whether tied under the chin in casual prairie chic, or covering the whole head in full ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ style, the SS22 hair scarf is as much about the design of the fabric as it was the make-up it was paired with. Playing with the idea of maturity and youth, make-up artists contradicted the timeless and often unassuming scarf with a loud and graphic eyeliner or lip, giving the look a high fashion twist just in time for the new season.”
